The simplest Halloween costumes seem to be the best costumes. It’s all about detail, detail, detail. One evening in 2006, I decided to be Courtney Love for Halloween while blow drying my bleached, dried out locks. Hands down, the most fun character to play for Halloween ever.

{Fashion Details:}

Vintage dress from Bettye Jane’s ($18) for a 90’s grunge-inspired Courtney

Pearl necklace, ribbon brooch, & earrings

Make-up: Frosty eye shadow, black eye liner, & red lipstick (all smeared and in disarray)

Hair: Lots of pomade, gel, volumizer, and hair spray (Yes, that is my real hair. Use a wig instead, if you don’t have bleached hair.)

{Details Not Shown:}

Faux bruises: Use a combination of blue, purple, and green eye shadows to make ‘bruises’ on your legs. A Courtney Love must-have accessory.

Shoes: White heels with black hearts, slightly 90’s looking.

Little Satin Purse: If you have a compact in there– throw it!

Last tip: Make your hair bigger as the night goes on, smear more lipstick on your lips/teeth, and have fun being a faux train wreck for the evening!

Thank you so much for this Kreativ Blog Award, Style Fuss! As this is my first blog award, it is a tremendous honor to receive it from such esteemed company. Thank you for continuing to share your unique view of art and fashion with us. I would also like to take the time to thank my readers and followers, whom always prove to be inspiring, intelligent, thoughtful, and extremely beautiful. Sorry Pretty Robotic has been a bit MIA lately, but please look forward to new material and design coming soon. Thanks again, Style Fuss!

{Here are the Rules for the Kreativ Blog Award.}
1. Tell 7 things that you don’t already know about me.

2. Name 7 other blogs to receive this award

3. Leave a comment on each of the blogs I nominated

4. Thank the person who gave you the award.

{7 Things You Might Not Know About Pretty Robotic}

1. People that know me as Pretty Robotic, might not realize that I haven’t always been a brunette. Technically a blond (when I was born), my locks have morphed from platinum blond, deep burgundy, strawberry blond, fabulous redhead, dark auburn, and pretty much any other color of hair dye available.

2. I am extremely proud to be in an interracial marriage. My (Puerto Rican- American) husband and I happily look forward to celebrating our 2 year wedding anniversary in early November!

3. Fashion wasn’t always my major in college. For the first year, I was a business major with a minor in apparel merchandising. It didn’t take a lot of time to realize that fashion was and always will be my first and foremost passion.

Dressing a Mannequin

4. Pretty Robotic started out as the Pretty Robot Girl site in 2003. It was my first attempt at tackling fashion, music, and women’s/cultural issues as a teen starting out their first semester of college. Six years later, you can find pretty robotic’s take on fashion, beauty, and DIY right here.

5. I was a pretty lame student in high school. Making the transition from a lower-level high school in Illinois, to a highly awarded blue-ribbon high school in Tennessee was extremely difficult. I was having difficulties passing my classes before I moved, let alone trying to pass the new anxiety-inducing workload that baffled me at my new school. Despite lacking even a C average in high school, I found myself excelling once enrolled in college. Somehow I let my poor student past behind, and was able to feel positive about my studies and grades. I graduated in 2007 from ETSU with a Bachelor’s of Science in Apparel Merchandising (with a 3.1 GPA). Proving that it is never too late to start your education or to continue it. We are students everyday.

6. There have been a lot of fabulous women in my life that have inspired my fashion sense.

My Mom sewed her entire wardrobe to make fab 70’s blazers, matching hot pants, skirts, dresses, even bikinis.

My Monégasque Grandmother and Great Aunt were always at the height of french sophistication and glamour with stunning dresses, heels, flirty skirts, pant suits, scarves, great purses, fur, and exquisite jewelry from the 40’s to late 2000’s.

My American Grandma reminds me of a fabulous Dolly Parton in my child’s mind. Perhaps it was all of those fierce square dancing and clogging uniforms with sequin-adorned western shirts, gold belts, patchwork skirts with poofy slips underneath in every color, and of course classic clogging shoes. Despite the glam-western facade from performances and competitions, her tall, slender, yet curvaceous body was the epitome of woman to me. She wore clothing with the ultimate confidence, opting for classic skirts, dresses, turtleneck sweaters, costume jewelry, platinum blond hair, and sometimes a belly dancing instructor costume for classes.

My older sister places importance on matching and having great piece options like structured jackets, tailored slacks, and a hot pair of heels. Also, she is an amazing baby stylist placing her daughter in the most fabulous of bright hued outfits that we all would have literally gone gaga for in the 80’s.

My younger sister doesn’t mind to mix and ‘not’ match. Which, I adore. She aces mixing color, print, pattern, and texture like her Psych exams. Her statuesque beauty is the perfect model for her geek chic style. She is a constant muse and Barbie Doll for me.

My Puerto Rican Mother-In-Law reminds me that we must all wear colors that work with our skin tones-not against them. She always chooses colors that light up her eyes, skin, and hair color. She is one of those lucky people that can wear brown and her eyes look brown, or green and her eyes look green, blue, or hazel.

7. Last but not least, I have been a clogger since the age of five. My grandparents taught clogging lessons, so I clogged my entire childhood. I was part of “The Little Egyptian Cloggers” that performed at many State Fairs, won competitions, and attended many conventions. I haven’t clogged since after sixth grade, but you can definitely find me clogging in my apartment or trying to teach my husband the double-step-rock step.

{7 Blogs Nominated by Pretty Robotic for the Kreativ Blog Award}

6. Corpulent: Read fabulous posts about plus-size politics and what it is like to be on the curvaceous side. Also, I’m addicted to her Tumblr, Hey Fat Chick!

7. Cruziiie: You must see the fierceness that is Cruziiie! Fashion, beauty, food, gossip, and more fabulosity!

The Kreativ Blog Award deserves to go to all of you! Thank you for continuing to inspire me and your readers in every way imaginable! Keep up the great, kreativ work!

Dearest Pretty,

Are pencil skirts flattering on most body types? My belly is my problem area and I was wondering if they would still work on me. If not, is there a stylish alternative for fall? Thanks love!

- Curvaceous & Curious

Pencil Me In Plus by prettyrobotic featuring dollhouse shoes (Plus Sizes)

Perfect question. I think that pencil skirts are flattering on all figure types. If you are curvy, then you should definitely be curious about pencil skirts. Pencil skirts elongate the frame, create smooth lines, and add a simplistic chic aspect for day and night.

Try styling pencil skirts in different ways that are confidently flattering:

Belt it. Belt a boyfriend cardigan over a crisp collared shirt. Or skip the cardigan and belt your favorite pencil skirt.

Print & Texture, please. Be on the lookout for plaids, tweeds, leather (& faux leather), ruffled, and tiered pencil skirts.

Tights. Tights slim the figure and streamline curves.

Go all in. Try a pencil skirt dress that covers it all from top to bottom.

Go ahead, girl–vent…If you are a curvy girl, look for pencil skirts that have a back slit/vent that creates better comfort and mobility. Or perfect for the girl-on-the-commute, like Blueberry Bike, whom are getting to work via bicycles or that cement grind.

Diversify your pieces. Mix diverse pieces with a pencil skirt that are unexpected from your wardrobe. Top a simple long sleeved tee and pencil skirt with an elaborate, statement necklace. Try a monochromatic look with pieces in the same color family. Pair your skirt with a structured blazer or leather jacket and ripped tights for a night out.

Pencil Me In by prettyrobotic featuring Jessica Simpson shoes (Straight Sizes)

Style Lesson Rundown: Pencil skirts are for everyone and offer pretty, endless options. Per your question, should you pencil in pencil skirts? The answer…Yes, be curious. Very curious!

I love wearing something that feels glamorous with endless options. This french tank ‘dress’ could be tucked under high wasted trousers, denim, or a skirt. Also, layering another dress under this tank would transform the look with volume and texture. Or pairing this femme tank with a crisp, boyfriend blazer and leather leggings would create a smoldering menswear feeling. More or less, I love the aspect of adaptability in fashion. I love the element of surprise in making your typical looks from your wardrobe seem totally different.

What are your some of your ‘transformative’ pieces in your wardrobe? How do you make your pieces look different?

Rever en Jaune by prettyrobotic featuring Antik Batik

While most of us are dreaming of living on the beach, shopping at the markets in France, or hopping on a train to Italy; my parents are living the dream. In honor of my Father’s birthday, his robotic daughter would like to present a père inspired post.

My Father’s favorite color has always been yellow. Although, red seems to come in at a close second. Wearing yellow himself, yellow would become the traditional color of icing on birthday cakes, cards, clothing, and gifts for our Dad. For this year’s birthday, my parents will be dining at their favorite restaurant in Nice, France. I can imagine that this year’s gift of gold, will be enjoying a topaz sunset over the Mediterranean Sea. Happy Birthday, Dad! I love you!

Fashion Side Notes: How to Wear Yellow for Autumn

Fall’s yellow color palette includes honey yellow, golden topaz, warm marigold, golden wheat, butterscotch, and yellow green tones.

Mix bold yellows with neutral pieces in gray steel, taupe, and smoky quartz tones.

Make a gold statement. Pair a gray dress and tights with a bold, yellow clutch or pea coat.

Texture and Detail. Yellow is ready for fall with wool, silk, or cotton blends. Also, ribbon ties, toggle buttons, or ruffles makes autumn’s yellow palette fun and charming.

Continuer à rêver en jaune!

No cover, good music, and great friends can always be expected to be found at Tipton Street Pub in downtown Johnson City, Tennessee. Saving money at the door, will allow you to spend a bit more on the pour. If you have not made it down to Tipton Street Pub yet, come out for Happy Hour, great-priced grub, and a wide variety of beer/cocktails.

I wore this Nautical-striped, 3/4 sleeved top, over a men’s white tank, with a black bubble skirt for a casually lively evening at Tipton Street. A nautical look should be simple with one eye-catching detail. Choose one navy-inspired piece versus piling on gold buttons and anchors everywhere. Furthermore, everyone has their own opinion about mixing navy blue and black together. For my wardrobe, it is a definite yes! Navy blue and black as a color combination is interesting, slimming, and chic. A blazer would have been amazing with this ensemb, however Saturday night was fairly warm. Also, my gracious followers may recognize the black bubble skirt and flats. Someone needs to get a couple of new black skirts and some killer heels!

What item of clothing could you not live without wearing? How do you mix them into your wardrobe and avoid appearing fashionably redundant? Do you like navy blue and black together?
